Also, the beginning of the webcomic was focused on the world mechanics. Later, with the introduction of the trolls ( the aliens ) its an exploration of what its like being kids on the internet. The trolls are meant to represent specific parts of internet culture, and that makes their character memorable and likable. The plot also moves like a parabola, starting of slowly then shooting off quickly.
And without getting spoilery, the story's mythos is awesome and inspires the imagination. At least for me. :3
Hopefully that sheds some light as to why it's as popular as it is.

kinda find it weird that vriska's (and tav's and eri's) hair is the only one with a noticable amount of white in it thou...
